A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Mann started drawing and painting at an early age. His first passsion was custom cars and his first job was as an automobile painter. In 1963, David brought some of his artwork to the Kansas City Custom Car Show. There a biker took an interest in Mann's artwork and with Dave's permission, fowarded it to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, a pop art icon who was then the publisher of one of the worlds first custom motorcycle magazines, Choppers.

David Mann was an American artist famous for his paintings of motorcycles and biker culture. Most of his famous works, he created for the motorcycle industry, which were mostly featured in magazines. Some of Mann's art has been seen on the television show American Chopper. An episode was devoted to the building of a custom motorcycle that would honor his body of works. The bike was entitled the "David Mann" bike. Mann's health started to decline in the early 2000's and after a lengthy ilness, he died in Kansas City in 2004.
